When using the T1 it regularly falls over with time-outs and comms errors whilst connected to a car it also has limitations in what you can do with the 75 and ZT and it will not talk to my V8 at all. I get a similar message to the one of the OP it is good for older mgr cars though.
The T4 I have uses a Dell dimension Laptop running Windows 98 which must be preinstalled first as the current RDS CD has just the T4 backend app. I have also built up a second Windows XP laptop using a Compaq EVO N400c and will be making that one dual boot so I can run Landrover RDS 6 or MGR RDS 5.06 I also use XP as you are able to ctrl-alt-del back to task manager so can use other apps, do screen dump capture car reports etc. Under Windows 98 even if not running as a shell initially once the T4 menu is launched it is not easy to use anything else.
FYI under XP the T4 menu installs as a shell in the registry here
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon
Shell=T4menu.exe
replacing that with
Shell=Explorer.exe
gives you back your normal XP machine and a T4 shortcut on the desktop
Under windows 95/98 there is a startup.bat at the root of c: which calls the T4Menu.exe as the shell which is useful to temporarily rem out if you need to maintain the PC occasionally.]
I do have a genuine T4 on the Dell machine supplied. The T4 software takes control of the Dell, as I have the T4+RDS 5.06 software I want to install this on another laptop running Windows XP and configuring it (as indicated above) to have the normal XP macjne and T4 as a shortcut on the desktop. I had hoped that Keiths advice would work but it doesn't the T4 still takes over the machine even though I have followed the instructions above - does anyone know how I can get the normal windows desktop and T4 as a shortcut as it would make the machine much more usable. Obviously I have all the cables, docking station and CDs etc. Land Rover and MGs.
And is Keith Alexander still around?

Rover Diagnostic software, Testbook T4?
Saturday 29th December 2012
I've a 1999 Rover 1.8 VVC'ed engined car and I'm interested to know what home diagnostic software you can get to read it's error, fault codes, what the ECU see's.Results of range rover t4 testbook diagnostic torrent: Free download software, Free Video dowloads, Free Music downloads, Free Movie downloads, Games. I've heard of Testbook T4 software. Is it as simple as getting the software, installing onto a laptop and then getting a cable to go from the Laptop.
I'm thinking of moving to Oz in a few years and hopefully taking the car, so cost dependant, I thought it might be something useful to have for now and the future, not sure how much of Rover cars got over to Oz.So I've the Rover diagnostic port under the dash ready and waiting.
I've heard of Testbook T4 software. Is it as simple as getting the software, installing onto a laptop and then getting a cable to go from the Laptop to the diagnostic plug? My initial findings show that this might be a cheaper route than buying a handheld unit, as this way I've already the expensive of the computer aspect as it were.
Not sure if this is the only software, just one that I've found on my searches relating to Rover diagnostics.
I've heard of a few Bluetooth car diagnostic plugs that can then talk to a tablet (Torque android app)/ PC via Bluetooth which is another option. I looked this up but I'm not 100% sure what port (?) my car has.

Hi,
T4 is difficult to obtain, and your car is very likely a MEMS2j / non-OBD2 compatible motor.
What you want is a thing called T300+, chinese made and roughly £100-£150 depending on supplier/shipping costs.
There is much more information here: http://forums.mg-rover.org/showthread.php?t=454351

Many thanks for that reply. I notice that you are in the South East, is this something that you have access too?
